Mary O'Hara

My Friend Flicka remains one of my favorite books even though it is usually classed as a children's book. It is written almost as if it is intended for adults, although it is about a ten-year-old boy. The book often goes behind the scenes into the parent's interaction and it is almost as much about their marriage as about Ken. Sensitive, absent-minded Ken wants to please his father but ends up frustrating him more often than not. He daydreams at school and gets failing grades. He doesn't do things right around the ranch. His father is ready to give up on him but his mother pleads that letting the boy have the colt he wants so much would be the best thing for him. Of course, Ken chooses the last horse his father wants him too, a filly with a wild mother who may be impossible to train.

This book would be enjoyed by young adults and adults as well as older children.
