Adam of the Road is a very educational, very readable book, set in thirteenth century England. I loved it as a child. Adam is the son of a minstrel and they spend their days traveling through England. When his father and his dog disappear, Adam is left to travel alone in search of them. This is a non-scary adventure and a pleasant way to learn a lot of interesting things about old England.
