"Happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in it's own way."
So begins the classic novel, Anna Karenina, which many consider to be the greatest novel ever written. Tolstoy put many years and much rewriting into it, and it is very complex and well-developed. The opening sentence says in a nutshell what the book is about: the intense pain of infidelity and its results compared with a happy, faithful relationship. The book is heavy, dealing with adultery and suicide in one couple, but is balanced with the faithfulness and godly living of another couple. One of the main character's, Levin, is based on Tolstoy himself and his spiritual journey. The book is not difficult to read but quite large--864 pages of reading or 36 hours of listening.
