Carol Ryrie Brink

This is a girl's classic based on the author's grandmother's life during the early Wisconsin frontier days. It is somewhat reminiscent of Laura Ingalls Wilder's Little House books, only less nostalgic and more adventurous. Caddie is a tomboy whose Father allowed her to run wild outdoors for her health. Fortunately, Caddie began to see value in ladylike behavior by the end of the book. My favorite part was when her father inherited an estate in England and had an opportunity to go back to his homeland and be a lord.

There is a moderate amount of mildly objectionable language and a bit of romance--Caddie's brother has a crush on a girl at school and gives her a Valentine.
