The Giver is a blend of science fiction and mystery and is a good introduction to dystopian fiction. Jonas lives a perfect life in a perfected society, but he refuses to be brainwashed into not thinking for himself and becomes increasingly troubled by the price of perfection. I have always disliked the inconclusive ending but it's a good, mind-stretching story. Selective infanticide is central to the story.
