One of my favorite non-fiction books is Reclaiming Conversation: The Power of Talk in a Digital Age by Sherry Turkle. She has a lot of thought-provoking things to say about our digital communications. Why might I prefer to retreat behind my phone and text someone who is somewhere else when I'm in a crowd of people with plenty of real-life conversation opportunities? Why is it so hard to say things in real-life but easy to dump out our feelings online or in a text message, then possibly regret the result? Do we know how to be truly alone? Do we know how to cope with negative feelings without reaching for our phones? Most of all, do we still know how to have meaningful conversations with the people right in front of us?
