A suspenseful story set in the English countryside near a railway. Father has suddenly and mysteriously disappeared. Mother is vague about his whereabouts and seems worried. She moves the children to the country, and they have to live more frugally than before. The children help as best they can and have interesting adventures involving the railway. Fortunately, the story has a happy ending.
